Typical driving exercises include:
Slalom
A simple slalom course, snaking through a straight line of cones, provides a fantastic opportunity to understand and feel the steering effects on a vehicle due to lateral acceleration and acceleration weight transfer. The slalom exercise reinforces the requirement that, when near the vehicle's limits, a driver must be very smooth with control inputs and that patience and sensitivity on the pedals can build speed and control.
Braking Exercise
In this exercise the student will learn to brake and turn at the same time in order to avoid or miss an obstacle and maintain control of the vehicle.
High Speed Turns (Lines and Apex's)
The purpose of this exercise is to illustrate the fastest or smoothest way to go around a corner. Students will develop these skills during practice on a drive track.
Accident Avoidance Exercise
The benefit of this exercise is that students learn how to drive around an obstacle without using the brakes. This exercise is similar to the slalom in that you drive a radius, except that in this exercise the instructor directs students when to turn and which direction to go, either right or left.
"J" Turn Exercise
The purpose of the "J" turn is to put as much distance between you and the problem as rapidly as possible. You can do a "J" turn within the width of a city street. Students will develop these skills during practice on a drive track.
Backing
The purpose of this activity is to demonstrate that vehicle control while backing is difficult, the student will be required to perform straight line backing, multiple vehicle reverse out maneuvers and backing through a series of cones.
Ramming
The purpose of this activity is situational dependent; in the case of an ambush, the primary goal is to ram the blocking vehicle in a manner that will allow you to continue your travel to a safe point out of the kill zone, in a non hostile environment, the goal is to adjust the point of impact so as minimize personal injury.
